I was super careful with the darts and in the end they look okay. It was fun tracing them with my perforating wheel.
Then I laid out another skirt, Simplicity 4041. This one is a little more contemporary cut (four pleats in the front to add fullness and has bias-cut pockets (and waistband, my addition).
This plaid was on sale at Hancock Fabric today as an "unadvertised manager special". I was very strict with myself that I would only buy the fabric if I started making it up tonight. I'm not sure if I'll line it or not- the extra fabric in the front wouldn't hang right for lining, I think. Has anyone else made this (or similar)?

Really nice!! I really like that skirt, it will look great on you.
I cannot be asked to hem by hand. I love the look of that plaid. I too must discipline myself when it comes to sales and specials. It's not really working for me. But, I like to say I discipline myeself. Cute skirt and with temps like those no wonder you are cranking them out in wool. Shudder.
If in doubt about the lining, you can just wear a slip. But often, to line a skirt, I just cut the same pieces as the skirt in lining fabric. Then I sew the side and back seams. Then I baste the lining to the skirt around the waist. After that, I take up the tucks in both the lining and skirt fabric, sandwiched together, before I put the waistband on. It may be a bit bulkier having the two layers of fabric together but it's not that bad. If you are doing the same thing with darts, I sew the darts in both the lining and the skirt and then press the darts one way for the skirt (usually out) and the other way (in) for the lining. Then you have less bulk at the waist when you baste the lining to the skirt and then put on the waistband.
We are getting the same cold weather and so I have made up a wool skirt and am making a corduroy one in my spare time and not blogging about them (it slows me down). And I am lining both. In really cold weather, I will even wear a slip under a lined skirt for that extra layer of insulation!
I just did my first lining yesterday- basically, did exactly as juliar said she does hers. It looks good and dressed up the skirt. If you cut down on the fullness of the S4041 skirt lining, make sure you can still walk in it. You might want to draft your own pattern for the lining, but that would take a bunch more time than I would want to spend. Your skirts look awesome! Way to go!
Oh my gosh, I promise I'll send you my class notes/diagrams from my sewing class on linings! Which view are you making? I don't think you should have a problem as those skirts look like they should be fairly easy to line (says she who has only made 3.5 lined garments). I have a brooks brothers skirt that box pleats in the front and back in the fashion fabric only. The lining follows the shape of the garment and has identical darts at the waist. Does that help? What does Simplicity tell you to do?
And your black skirt is fabulous. With some high heels, how long will your legs look! Oh to be 6 feet tall...
Hems are my weakness, too. Steam a seam is my friend.
I love the skirt Sarah! It is so pretty! I have to learn to sew clothes. I like reading how you bargain with yourself: buy if you make it right away. Maybe I should try that...
